Hi, My MacBook Pro will not wake up when opening the lid, it keeps thinking that it is still in clamshell mode. When connecting an external display it works but when removing the external display it will not revert back to the internal display. Also, when shutting down and I close the lid I cannot turn the device on, but when shutting down with the lid open it works as intended, I tried running a magnet near the left side thunderbolt ports sure enough the screen turns off and will not turn on. An SMC reset does fix the problem but I dont think I can do an SMC reset every time I close the lid of my laptop. Is this a magnet sensor fault for the lid? Update (01/31/2019) Update: It happened again. I’ve changed all my power outlets as well. What is causing this?

It does sound like you have a Hall sensor issue. Sadly, the sensor is mounted on the logic board and is a custom part on the logic board. You’ll need a new logic board which is quite expensive.

I would recommend you go to an Apple Store to see if you can get a warranty exception as this shouldn’t have failed. You will likely need to press to get it fixed. Be firm and polite, you will likely need to work up the food chain. I wish you luck, let us know how you do.
