Chosen Solution
I was streaming a video online and then the screen went blank like it does when the battery dies. So I let it charge and when I tried to restart the computer everything on my desktop was gone.
Move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Desktop, OPTION-click & hold the Finder’s Dock icon, and select Relaunch
